Just in time for National Burrito Tuesday, Yelp released its list of 100 burrito restaurants in the U.S., and its top spot is a San Diego restaurant.
“In honor of National Taco Day — and taking into account the variety of taco flavors in the country — we’ve curated the top taco spots in the U.S. based on your ratings and reviews,” Yelp reports, adding elsewhere , “At the top of the list is Fernandez Restaurant in San Diego, California, and Yelpers rave about birria tacos.”
For those unfamiliar with Ed Fernandez Restaurant Birrieria, it’s located at 2265 Flower Ave. Near Nestor on South Bay in San Diego, just west of I-5 and east of Empire Beach.
“Ed Fernandez Restaurant Birrieria has been scooping juicy, delicious meat onto handmade tortillas since 2005,” Yelp yelled, and Yelper Nicole C. added, “Oh my God, it’s amazing. I can only Say this without drooling. Best birria I’ve ever had in San Diego. Super fresh and super affordable. Love the aquarium fresco, their hot sauce is amazing. “
Of course, there were other Golden State attractions on the list, including Sylmar’s Taqueria Mi Ranchito (No. 3) and Bellflower’s Taco Naz (No. 2), but Ed Fernandez took the crown.
Also breaking out locally: De Cabeza, in Chula Vista, took first place. 11 Simulation.
“This Southern California restaurant, located less than 10 miles from the Mexican border, specializes in cabeza (head),” a Yelp reviewer wrote. “This includes cabeza en su jugo – the regional delicacy of Sinaloa and Sonora – a large bowl of beef head and its parts (eyes, lips, tongue) in a broth and served with tortillas.”
No. 15: Mariscos Mi Gusto Es, which really is a bright blue burrito truck in Chula Vista, according to Yelp, a seafood lover’s dream: “Cooking almost anything you can think of Edible sea creatures, and those in the know use it to make a multi-course meal.”
Locals won’t be shocked to hear that Chula’s Tacos el Gordo also made the list and took first place. 41 Taunt.

San Diegans need to wait a bit, though: Ed Fernandez Restaurant Birrieria is closed on Tuesdays (Taco): only open Wednesday-Sunday 7am-2pm
