People in the North Baltimore community have called for local gas stations to be closed after a man was murdered there earlier this week. 11-News attended a vigil and rally tonight at Northwood Commons shopping center calling for more change. Dozens of people gathered outside a BP gas station. Now, a sign has appeared on the boarded-up window where victim Al Stevenson was shot. A candlelight vigil was held in his honor. People are now calling for gas stations to be closed, hoping to see less violence in their communities. “Before he could say anything, someone stood where we were and shot the entire window of the gas station. That’s why it was boarded by Jamal Day, Stevenson’s nephew and community organizer. (Jamar Day) said: “Unfortunately, he was shot at that moment. Day lost his uncle a week ago. He said the 56-year-old was buying a pack of cigarettes when someone shot through the window of the Northwood Commons BP petrol station, now boarded up with the A sign calling for an end to violence. “An innocent bystander! They need to get rid of this gas station. How many people will actually get hurt before they actually say enough is enough? Clara Bailey, a friend of Stevenson’s, said the community held a joint vigil last Saturday in front of the man known as the Gentle Giant. They want to see gas stations closed for good, Because they say it’s a “crime hub.” Day said Baltimoreans deserve better. “There’s a Baltimore City Code where we can put a lock on nuisance businesses that keep reducing crime and continue to do so. In the past 90 days, the business received 81 calls about criminal activity. So it meets this condition. It got up and one guy in the city, Commissioner Michael Harrison, actually shut it down with a padlock,” Day said. Keith Holt was one of several community leaders at the event. He’s lived in the area all his life, He said ending the violence was more than a call to action at this rally. “We really have to deal with the root causes, like why this is happening. “You know you shut down a gas,” said Holt, a member of the 43rd District Committee of the Baltimore Democratic State Central Committee. said a 22-year-old man. Stevenson was also found shot dead at a gas station when he was killed. Homicide detectives are investigating and are urging anyone with information to contact police.
